ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I

LESSON 5

Naming Molecules

How do chemists turn complicated molecular structures into names? In this lesson, we’ll introduce organic chemistry nomenclature and build a practical system for naming common organic molecules. We’ll identify the longest carbon chain, use prefixes and suffixes to describe molecular structure, number alkenes and alkynes, and add substituents and common functional groups to increasingly complex names.
