In 1869, Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev was trying to make sense of a growing collection of known elements. When he arranged them according to atomic weight and chemical behavior, a remarkable pattern emerged: similar properties appeared again and again at regular intervals. His early handwritten tables, which are reproduced faintly behind the quotation on this shirt, capture that idea while it was still being worked out.

The table has changed enormously since 1869. Whereas we now arrange the elements by atomic number rather than atomic weight, the periodicity Mendeleev recognized remains at its heart. The modern table on the front and his handwritten early version on the back show the same idea separated by more than a century of chemistry.

A Length

Begin at the collar on the top (high point shoulder) and draw the measuring tape down to the garment's bottom.

B Width

Start the measurement at the seam right below one sleeve and extend the tape across to the seam underneath the opposite sleeve.

C Sleeve length

Position the tape at the top of the set-in sleeve and extend it down to the sleeve's hem.
