Stereoisomerism & Diastereomers

How can two molecules have the same atoms, the same connectivity, and still be different compounds? In this lesson, we’ll introduce stereoisomerism and learn how the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms can create distinct molecules. We’ll identify common stereogenic centers, explore E and Z alkene stereochemistry, use wedges and dashes to represent 3D structure, and introduce diastereomers through examples including glucose and mannose.
