In 1865, August Kekulé proposed the cyclic structure of benzene, helping solve one of the great structural puzzles of nineteenth-century chemistry. Twenty-five years later, at a celebration held in his honor, Kekulé recounted the strange image that he said had helped inspire the idea: atoms twisting across his dozing mind like snakes until, suddenly, one seized its own tail and formed a ring.

Kekulé’s account has since become one of chemistry’s great legends, and the image of the snake closing into a circle ("ouroboros") remains a profound symbol of the moment when the structure of benzene came into view.
