ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I
LESSON 3
Conformation & Newman Projections
How do molecules move, and why are some conformations more stable than others? In this lesson, we’ll use Newman projections to visualize rotation around carbon–carbon single bonds and compare the different conformations of butane. We’ll examine how steric interactions affect molecular energy and learn to distinguish staggered, eclipsed, anti, and gauche conformations.
