ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I

LESSON 8

Formal Charge

What happens when an atom has more or fewer electrons than it normally would? In this lesson, we’ll introduce formal charge and develop a simple way to determine where positive and negative charges belong in organic molecules. We’ll use valence electrons, lone pairs, and covalent bonds to identify common charged species including carbocations, carbanions, oxyanions, and positively charged nitrogen.
